Full-Time Position International Human Rights/Disability Project. There is an immediate opening for a full-time position of Eastern Europe Regional Officer for the Disability Rights Promotion International (D.R.P.I.) project.   

D.R.P.I. is a collaborative project working to establish a holistic and sustainable global system to monitor the human rights of people with disabilities. D.R.P.I.’s International Coordination Centre is based at York University in Toronto, Canada.  With the support of Centre for Society Orientation – COD and Autism Society of Serbia, D.R.P.I. is establishing a Regional Centre for Eastern Europe in Belgrade, Serbia.  

The Eastern Europe Regional Center will be based in COD office in Belgrade and Eastern European Officer will work from the Belgrade office.  

We encourage applications from persons with disabilities, women, ethnic minorities and other marginalized groups.   

Dead line for receiving resumes and cover letters is 25. August 2010

Updates on UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities – CRPD PDF Print E-mail

Initial country reports submissions  

During July we had two new reports submitted to the CRPD Committee. Tunisia becomes second State to submit its report. The report is so far only available in Arabic and can be found on the CRPD Committee website. Click here. Third report was submitted by Peru. The report is available on Spanish. New ratifications and signings  

On July 7th, Ethiopia has become the 89th country in ratifying the CRPD.

Grenada become 146 Country that signed the CRPD on July 12th 2010.

The Global Commission on HIV and Law was officially launched on June 24, 2010 by Helen Clark, Administrator, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Michel Sidibé, Executive Director, The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). The Commission’s goal is to develop actionable, evidence-informed and human rights-based recommendations supporting national legal environments that enable effective HIV responses and realize the human rights of those living with and affected by HIV. To this end, the Commission will focus on some of the most challenging legal and human rights issues in the context of HIV, including criminalization of HIV transmission and behaviors and practices such as drug use, sex work and consensual adult same sex sexual relations.

The Commission is comprised of eminent leaders from public life who will provide global leadership on HIV-related legal and human rights issues by:

  1. Synthesizing knowledge and analysis on the interactions between the legal environments, human rights issues and HIV;

  2. Fostering evidence-informed public dialogue on the need for rights-based law and policy reform in the context of HIV and;

  3. Identifying clear and actionable recommendations with a concrete plan for follow-up

COD is strongly advocates for full implementation of UN CRPD in all countries in South East Europe, no meter if countries ratified it or not. Following the Article 21 Freedom of expression and opinion, and access to information, Center for Society Orientation - COD has prepared and published UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities - Easy reading on Serbian language.

Implementation of UNCRPD on local level in South East Europe Region PDF Print E-mail

COD in cooperation with Handicap International and Shia - the Swedish Organizations’ of Persons with Disabilities International Aid Association is organizing three days training from 25 – 27 May 2010 for representatives of nine local DPO coalitions and local authorities from Serbia. Trainers are COD Executive Director Zoltán Mihók and Dr. Sonja Vasić. The aims of this training are:

1)To raise of awareness on UNCRPD at the local level
2)To develop skills and tools for monitoring of implementation of CRPD at the local level
3)To understand how to monitoring the situation in the field of disability at the local level and how the monitoring can be implemented in their communities
4)To discuss possible models of future cooperation between local and national level for preparation of Alternative Report for CRPD from Civil Society
 
This training is part of series of five trainings in South East Europe. Two trainings were organized in first part of May in Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and two will be organized in Macedonia and Kosovo (UNSCR 1244) in end of Jun 2010.
