Accessible Elections

Center for Society Orientation – COD in partnership with National Democratic Institute – NDI started implementation of the project “Accessible Elections” supported by British Embassy in Belgrade.

Persons with disabilities have the right to participate in political and public life guaranteed by Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities ratified by Republic of Serbia. Article 29 said: “…(i)Ensuring that voting procedures, facilities and materials are appropriate, accessible and easy to understand and use”.

Project “Accessible Elections” has been developed, by Center for Society Orientation with assistance from NDI, to monitor participation of the Persons with Disabilities in electoral process with purpose of enhancing accessibility of this process and equalisation of opportunities for political participation.
In order to monitor the impact of the project as well as to contribute to the overall election monitoring reports, the project will have election monitors in two cities (Novi Sad and Belgrade) and one municipality (Velika Plana).

COD is planning to invite all interested DPOs and CSOs to take part in monitoring of accessibility elections through its info system filling in the questionnaire but also COD is opened for cooperation and suggestions from other similar initiatives.

At the end project team will prepare holistic monitoring report that will include individual experiences of PWDs in the upcoming elections, media accessibility review as well as legislative regulations in the area of political participation of persons with disabilities.
